Hello - My name is Jan
I work in an integrative way ensuring that the client does not feel judged so that they can feel confident enough to form a trusting relationship with me. I am led by the needs of the client sensitive to the fact that each individual person is an expert in understanding themselves and has the ability to help themselves with appropriate support
I am qualified to offer Online Counselling and Online supervision. I specialise in counselling young people / young adults, online and face to face. I understand the feelings of loneliness, despair and fear that many young people struggle with. I also appreciate how early intervention counselling can help prevent the development or escalation of mental health issues within this age group.
(For online counselling, young people = 17 years and above - All clients need to live within the British Isles)
Experience of working online
I counsel or supervise via email, video or Instant chat
I have considerable experience working in different roles with adults who have physical or sensory disabilities, learning differences such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD, mental health conditions, fatigue issues and autism spectrum disorders. In addition to experience of the effects of life events and caring roles on individuals. I am passionate about creating equal opportunities for all individuals.
I am an experienced registered BACP and ACTO counsellor and psychotherapist working in private practice and at a large charity in Edinburgh. I help people with a wide range of difficulties, from diagnosed mental health conditions, to feelings of depression and anxiety, bereavement, gender and sexuality issues and difficult relationship and workplace problems.
I understand every client to be unique in their personality and needs, and that while one therapeutic approach may be very helpful for a particular client, for another it might not be. I am trained in Psychodynamic, Person Centred and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy enabling me to work in a way that is best suited to each client; for example, providing plenty of space for you to tell your story, placing a greater or lesser emphasis on your childhood, using more or less structured thinking, or perhaps setting gentle but effective goals.
I work in a warm, supportive and open way, ensuring your voice and needs are heard and respected. In this way I support you to understand yourself; your needs, conflicts, anxieties, defences, and relational patterns on a much deeper level, enabling you to explore alternative ways of being and relating, to help bring you greater satisfaction and stability to your life.
I have a background in Education, Training and Adult Mental Health. In addition to my practices at Waterlooville, Cosham and Havant, I have worked in a Secondary School as a School Counsellor and in a primary school dealing with children who have behavioural and special educational needs. Therefore, I am experienced in managing challenging behaviour and have specific expertise in Autism and Asperger's.
I am a friendly, open, honest counsellor with a strong belief that we all have the right to live life in the way that suits each of us best. I have integrity and an eye for finding clarity among confusion. I offer you my balanced, person centred approach enabling us to form a strong working alliance which helps you to find your way through whatever challenge brings you to counselling.
My practise focusses on supporting people who work or live in remote or conflict affected locations; humanitarians, aid workers and international professional staff and their families.
I have more than 20years experience of working in the developing world and have personal insight and understanding of the challenges and stresses of this way of life.
I work from a humanistic/existential perspective providing a safe therapeutic space for my clients to explore their concerns, challenges and choices at their own pace.
At times we can all experience life situations and events that feel very overwhelming. It may create feelings of anger, stress, being unable to cope with everyday situations, feelings of sadness, of being low, frustration or powerlessness. Sometimes it may be hard to find someone to talk to who will understand and appreciate what it is that you may be experiencing. At times it may just be too hard to work out what is going on for you. Counselling can be a real opportunity to explore not only the current issues and what is bringing you but also to look at the root causes of your difficulties and to work with any patterns and behaviours that may be unhelpful. As a Psychodynamic Counsellor my aim is to firstly provide a warm, friendly, confidential and professional environment in which you can explore the issues that you feel need addressing. We will look at the underlying issues that are causing these difficulties and work towards change and self-discovery.
I have experience of working in private practice but also within a youth counselling organisation working with adolescence and also experience of working for a national sexual health charity. I have a particular interest in working with sexual minority issues and people who identify as LGBTQ.
I offer both short term and long-term counselling for both individuals and couples. I am fully insured and am a member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) abiding by their ethical framework and guidelines. I am also an Accredited Counsellor with the National Counselling Society (NCS). All my work is fully supervised and I am insured. I also regularly attend continuous professional development training opportunities.
I am committed to providing a safe, non-judgemental space for all my clients and maintain a very professional approach to my work. I will attend training courses on a regular basis to ensure that my work continues to meet these standards.
